Changes to website
It’s been a few months since I’ve put any updates on here. I would really like to try doing more with this site.
I’ve made some changes to how projects are displayed on the site. Instead of linking to GitHub, it now actually shows the source right here on the website, with all files and commit history available to traverse.
It came alongside a recent personal push towards self-hosting everything. I’ve spent the last few weeks moving away from pretty much every third-party service that I use to store my data (willingly) that I could think of. It’s been going really well, but moving from GitHub has been a bit of an annoyance.
Right now this site is hosted on a VPS, whereas all of my other stuff is hosted on a home server which - due to circumstances outside my control - I am unable to run 24/7. For now my compromise has been pulling in data from my Git server and then using that to populate my projects page. I’ve actually been having some fun writing that functionality too!
There are a few downsides to this method. I need to be careful with what I’m placing in my Git server to make sure I’m only pushing up what I want, and I’m also - for now - giving up the ability to clone my repositories from this site.
This is something I intend to implement in the future once I can get a stable mirror of my repos active somewhere with 24/7 uptime, but in the meantime if you’d like to make a fork of anything or just pull the code down, feel free to get in touch.
Among other things, I’ve also made some styling changes and fixes to things like link colours and highlighting. I’ve moved back to University in the last few weeks, and unfortunately picked up a nice dose of what the youths are calling ‘Freshers Flu’, so I’ve been reeling in that for a while and not had much free-time outsided of it to focus on projects. Nonetheless, I hope to be sticking more on here soon.
